Why Do My Feet and Shoes Smell Like Weed? (Explained)

In short: When you smoke weed, terpenes, the compounds responsible for the “weed smell” are stored in your body’s fat cells, broken down, and released back into your bloodstream. As your feet sweat, the terpenes are excreted, making them smell like weed.

When it comes to sweating, the feet are a unique part of the human body. Unlike the rest of the body, the soles of human feet are covered with more than 100,000 sweat glands per foot.

However, some people have reported that their feet smell like weed. In this article, let’s talk about the reasons why as well as some of the things you can do to solve the issue.

Why your feet smell like weed (cannabis)

Researchers have identified the compounds responsible for stinky sweat’s pungent smell. The compounds are called terpenes and are found in plants, herbs, and fruits.

Although terpenes are aromatic compounds found in many plants, many people commonly associate them with cannabis because cannabis plants contain high concentrations of them.

When you smoke weed, the terpenes are stored in your body’s fat cells. As your body breaks down these fat cells, the cannabinoids are released back into your bloodstream.

As your feet sweat, the terpenes are excreted along with your sweat. This is the reason why your feet, and possibly your shoes, smell like weed (cannabis).

Myrcene is the culprit

Cannabis flowers are made up of over 100 terpenes, but the most common one is myrcene. In fact, this particular compound contributes more than 50% of the aroma of weed (cannabis).

Myrcene is the particular terpene that contributes to the pungent odor of weed. The “weed smell” is most pronounced on older plants because the myrcene concentration is stronger.

Will you know if your feet smell like weed?

Most people will notice when their feet sweat and smell like weed. I’m not speaking from personal experience but I have plenty of friends who have had this issue.

A friend of mine has feet, shoes, and socks that smell like weed after a long day on his feet. It doesn’t matter if he has or hasn’t smoked that day. And it’s not just a slight smell, it’s potent.

Whenever he takes off his shoes, the whole room smells like weed. In fact, he has to carry spare socks and wash his shoes every time after wearing them.

Mind you, he is a fairly heavy user as he smokes up to a 1.5 most days, but he does have friends who smoke far more but don’t have this issue at all. Go figure.

How to get rid of weed-smelling feet

If you dread the weed-smelling stench of your feet and don’t want to disturb the people around you, here are some of the things you can do to get rid of the cannabis odor.

1. Smoke less weed (or abstain from it)

The best way to prevent your feet from smelling like weed is to smoke less weed. As a result, the amount of cannabinoids and terpenes that remain in your body decreases.

Or better yet, you can abstain from smoking weed. Over time, the myrcene, which is the particular terpene that contributes to the pungent odor of weed, will be gone from your body.

2. Wear breathable socks and shoes

You could also wear a pair of breathable socks and shoes to keep the sweat at manageable levels. Without proper airflow, your feet will sweat more and produce more weed odor.

Choose a pair of socks made of breathable materials like polyester and/or nylon. You should also wear shoes with plenty of ventilation holes to keep the temperature cool inside.

3. Wash your feet and change your socks

Another thing you can do to eliminate the pungent weed odor is to wash your feet as well as change your socks and shoes as often as possible.

If you have several sneakers, switch them out every day. Changing your shoes and wearing a different pair every day to help them dry out properly, reducing bad foot odor.

4. Use foot probiotic foot spray

If you think you have an extreme weed smell from your feet, you’ll need to take extra steps to keep the odor in check. The best way to do this is to use a probiotic foot spray.

This product, in particular, is filled with probiotic extracts that are designed to restore your skin’s healthy microbiome and rebalance the bacterial environment on your foot.

In short, it will prevent the smell from happening. Foot odor is about bacteria and not having the right balance of bacteria, and this spray will get your feet smelling as good as they should.
